Tow Big, Spend Less at the Bowser: Meet the New GWM Cannon PHEV
Tow Big, Spend Less at the Bowser: Meet the New GWM Cannon PHEV
If you work hard, tow hard and play hard, pay attention. The new GWM Cannon Hi4-T PHEV is coming soon to Knox GWM in Ferntree Gully, and it’s shaping up to be one of the most exciting utes to land in Melbourne’s east this year.
Whether you’re a tradie clocking up kilometres between job sites, a weekend adventurer chasing the next campsite or someone who just wants a capable ute that costs less to run, the new Cannon PHEV deserves a spot on your shortlist.
What is the new GWM Cannon Hi4-T PHEV?
The GWM Cannon Hi4-T PHEV is a plug-in hybrid dual-cab ute that pairs a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine with an electric motor and a 33.1kWh battery. Together they deliver a combined 310kW of power and 750Nm of torque, with mechanical four-wheel drive to put it all on the ground.
In simple terms, you get the muscle of a serious 4x4 with the option of quiet, fuel-free electric driving around town. It sits alongside the larger Cannon Alpha PHEV, making GWM the only brand in Australia with two plug-in hybrid utes on offer.

Built for tradies
Your ute is your office, and downtime costs money. The Cannon Hi4-T PHEV is designed to keep up with the working week, with a payload of 835kg and a GVM of 3,420kg.
The real win for tradies is the running costs. Short trips to the shops, the servo-free commute and the run to the local job can all be done on electric power if you charge up at home or on site. Then, when the job takes you further, the petrol engine is there so you’re never planning your day around a charger.
There’s also vehicle-to-load capability, so you can power tools and equipment straight from the vehicle when you’re away from a power point. Check the final details with our team when you visit.
Towing: the Cannon PHEV doesn’t back down
A lot of plug-in hybrids give up towing ability to make room for the battery. The Cannon Hi4-T PHEV doesn’t. It offers a 3,500kg braked towing capacity, matching the figure you’d expect from many diesel utes, plus a dedicated towing drive mode.
That means the caravan, boat, horse float or work trailer can come along for the ride. It’s also a big drawcard for anyone who has wanted the efficiency of a hybrid but couldn’t compromise on towing. As always, check your tow ball weight, GVM and GCM before you hitch up, and our team can talk you through it.
Range: electric around town, petrol for the long haul
Here’s where the PHEV setup really earns its keep. GWM claims up to 115km of electric-only range (NEDC), enough to cover most daily commutes and local runs without using a drop of fuel. Real-world range will vary with load, towing, terrain and driving style, so it pays to see how it suits your routine.
Once the battery is depleted, the petrol engine takes over, and GWM’s claimed total driving range is 1,037km*. That’s Melbourne to Canberra and a good way back again, without stressing about where the next charger is. For regional trips, big towing weekends and long hauls to the worksite, that flexibility is a game changer.
Terrain and adventure
If your idea of a good weekend involves dirt roads, creek crossings and camping spots with no phone reception, the Cannon Hi4-T PHEV is ready for it. It features mechanical four-wheel drive, a minimum ground clearance of 232mm and a 500mm wading depth.
Add in the quiet, torquey electric power for slow-going technical tracks and you have a ute that’s as comfortable crawling over rough terrain as it is cruising on the highway. Inside, the new Cannon PHEV debuts GWM’s Coffee OS software with a large 15.6-inch touchscreen, so the cabin is far more than a work cab.
